In 1969 International Badger Expert Ruth Murray visited Potters Bar, Weighbridge Laboratories, where she witnessed a badger being injected with T.B. She said at the time that it could have been any form of wildlife that was chosen but the unfortunate badger was the political scapegoat.
The Government were using the badger as a scapegoat for the new E.E.C. rulings concerning Bovine T.B. Politicians were concerned that to meet the Common Market terms of entry a stricter TB test would be applied to the National Cattle herd.
Inevitably the change of Test would reveal more reactors. Large compensation claims for extra cows failing tests would be demanded and an explanation needed for a situation, which would appear to be a major Bovine TB breakdown.
The Government are still culling badgers for experiments without proof of involvement with Bovine T.B.
